Men’s Basketball has a champion! The Connecticut Huskies beat the Kentucky Wildcats 60-54 in the NCAA championship game on Monday night.
Point guard Shabazz Napier scored a game-high 22 points to lead the way for the Huskies. He was helped out by guard, Ryan Boatright who added 14 points. On the other side of the court, forward James Young put 20 points on the boards for the Wildcats.
It’s been almost 30 years since a team seeded as low as the seventh-seeded Huskies had won the NCAA championship game. In 1985, eighth-seeded Villanova won the NCAA national championship.
Since 1999, the Connecticut Huskies have won four national titles, but it was the first NCAA championship for Coach Kevin Ollie who took over the helm from longtime coach Jim Calhoun. Interestingly, Ollie became only the second coach in history to win an NCAA championship game in his first tournament appearance—that’s quite an achievement.
