Testimony, the newest release from R&B stud August Alsina, is one of the most honest records in the genre in years. That may seem like a bold statement, but the topics Alsina covers throughout the 16 tracks on the record include violence, death, drug dealing, and the tough decisions one has to make in order to survive in the ghettos of his native New Orleans. These subjects — first laid bare by Nas on his seminal album Illmatic — are delivered in expert fashion, as Alsina’s voice has impressive range. His talents go beyond vocals though, as he is also able to convey these complex and searing lyrics in a genre normally reserved for ballads.

Alsina gets some help from top emcees of the year, including Jeezy, who makes an appearance on the single, “Make it Home,” a tear-jerking track about the uncertainty of a safe return home after a day in the streets. Other notable guests on Testimony include Pusha T, Trinidad James, and Rick Ross, who raps a verse on the other single, “Benediction,” a highlight from the record for both Alsina’s vocals and a hook that will undoubtedly be stuck in your head hours after listening.

Knowing the hurdles Alsina had to jump in order to get where he is today, Testimony is not just a record worth your time, but one worth your careful consideration. Not only is Alsina a pleasure to listen to on simply melodic levels, it’s also a testament to the fact that talent can and does lift people out of the rat race and into success. You should spring for the deluxe edition, as it boasts two bonus tracks, including “I Luv This Shit,” which features Trey Songz and Chris Brown.
