College Football Player and NFL Prospect Michael Sam Comes Out

Just two weeks before the NFL Combine, Missouri defensive end Michael Sam announced in interviews with The New York Times and ESPN on Sunday that he was gay. Some might be surprised to find out that this was no secret to his Mizzou teammates. The All-American and SEC Defensive Player of the Year told his team about his sexuality before the season even started at a team meeting.

It’s been predicted that he might be drafted early in May. If so, Michael Sam would become the first openly gay football player in the NFL. Coming out has been important to Sam, who said, “Once I became official to my teammates, I knew who I was. I was so proud of myself, and I just didn’t care who knew.”

The NFL issued a supportive statement saying, “We admire Michael Sam’s courage…and any player with ability and determination can succeed in the NFL.” Of course, there is no guarantee that Sam will be drafted, but his chances do look good.

Realizing the gravity of his decision to come out before the NFL Draft, Michael Sam said, “I know this is a huge deal.” The bottom line is that Sam is a quality football player and would make a great addition to any NFL team needed to shore up their defensive line.
