Unfortunately, the Confederate flag debate is still a debate in some places like the south, where it remains a sensitive and controversial issue. To make matters worse, many Mississippi politicians are refusing to even give their position on the Confederate flag debate. The Clarion-Ledger newspaper sought a response from Mississippi state lawmakers on this question:

Do you support legislative action to remove the Confederate emblem from the Mississippi state flag?

The names and faces of 106 state politicians who were undecided or refused to respond appeared like mug shots in a full-page spread in the Clarion-Ledger on July 4th, our nation’s day to celebrate its independence. The headline read “Code of Silence” and publicly shamed state leaders for being unwilling to state their position on the Confederate flag issue. See photo below.
